Strength
Hannes Steinbach is one of the most physically prepared freshmen in college basketball, combining legitimate NBA size, strength, and length with a strong feel for the game. His rebounding ability is already elite at the college level because of his positioning, timing, and physicality, especially on the offensive glass where he consistently creates second-chance opportunities. Around the rim, he plays through contact well, has soft touch as a finisher, and understands how to seal defenders for deep post position. Although Washington's system limited his offensive role, he still impacted spacing through his offensive rebounding gravity, forcing opposing bigs to stay attached to him. He also flashes long-term upside as a stretch big due to his solid shooting mechanics and playmaking, while defensively his size and instincts give him the potential to become a reliable paint presence and a modern versatile big man.
Weakness
Despite his physical tools, Steinbach can struggle defensively because of his limited agility and vertical explosiveness, which allows quicker forwards and more skilled offensive players to attack him in space. He has difficulty navigating screens, especially against stretch fours, and can be vulnerable when switched onto guards or wings. In ball-screen coverage, he sometimes leaves openings for rolling or popping bigs due to both scheme limitations and inconsistent recovery speed. Offensively, his role has been fairly narrow, with much of his production coming from hustle plays and offensive rebounds rather than advanced self-creation. When he does receive post touches, he can rush decisions, pick the ball up too early, and force awkward finishes instead of staying patient and reading the defense. He struggled against physical teams in college and that will be a problem in the NBA when every team will be even more physical.
Outlook
Steinbach projects as a long-term NBA rotational big with the upside to eventually become a high-level starter if his offensive versatility and defensive consistency continue to improve. His combination of size, rebounding instincts, touch, and feel gives him a strong foundation to carve out a valuable role, even if his athletic limitations cap part of his ceiling. If his perimeter shooting develops, he could evolve into a modern stretch big who impacts both spacing and offensive rebounding, similar stylistically to Al Horford. His handle and passing flashes are also intriguing, and in the right developmental system, there is room for him to grow into a much more complete offensive player. Even if the jumper never fully comes around, his rebounding, physicality, and overall basketball IQ should still allow him to have a long and impactful NBA career.
